Spain has been a melting pot of people and cultures throughout its history, but no two groups have influenced Spain more than the Arabs and the Jews.

Academic Overview

Spain has been a melting pot of people and cultures throughout its history, but no two groups have influenced Spain more than the Arabs and the Jews.  The first evidence of Jewish settlements in Spain started in the third century.  They had control over the Mediterranean trade on the eastern and southern coasts of Spain.  They also were the bankers and businessmen who dominated the early Spanish economy.  The Arabs arrived in 711 and pushed north from North Africa and were a dominant force until their final defeat at Granada in 1492.  These Muslims, later called Moors, opened Spain to Eastern civilization and even introduced Greek philosophy to the Iberian Peninsula.  Córdoba & Toledo were considered the new Athens of Europe.  We will focus our studies on five cities that most reflect the Arab and Jewish influence.  They include Valencia, Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Jaen, Cuenca, Segovia and Seville.  Before exploring Spain, we will follow the steps of the Arab invasion through Morocco to the shores of Algeciras, Spain.  Madrid will be our ending point for this course, which will give time to explore this beautiful capital.  Every aspect of Spain that was affected by the Jews and Arabs will be explored, which includes the language, art, literature, music, dance, food, customs, holidays, architecture and religion.   We must include the study of the Spanish Inquisition in order to fully appreciate the Jewish and Arab cultures in Spain.  This course will give the student a better understanding of the elements that shape present day religious and world conflicts.

Program Fee
Cost: $6025-$6325
*Each home institution may have supplementary fees in addition to the price listed. Program Fee includes: Transportation and course arrangements as indicated, hotel accommodations in twin and triple rooms, continental breakfast daily, two lunches and eight dinners (subject to change).

Prerequisites
No pre-requisites required except for St. Thomas who wants students to take the first semester religion course before taking this course.

Description of Faculty Directors
Sam Ogdie has over twenty years of experience teaching Spanish at high school and college levels. He holds a Master’s degree in Selected Studies from the University of South Dakota with focus on Hispanic Studies. Prof. Ogdie spent two summers in Santiago, Chile, one summer in the Dominican Republic and one summer at the University of Valencia in Spain studying Hispanic culture and language. He has organized and led nine education summer study trips to Spain, received three National Endowment Study Grants and a teacher’s scholarship from the Embassy of Spain to study Spanish culture and language at the University of Salamanca. In 2002 he received a U.S. Presidential Scholars Teachers Recognition Award in Washington D.C. from the    U.S. Department of Education.    Professor Ogdie has taught almost 30 years. This will be his 14th UMAIE study-abroad course.

Cathie Ogdie has over twenty-four years of experience in healthcare and more than nine years’ experience teaching business and medical laboratory classes at the college level. She holds a Master’s degree in Administrative Studies from the University of South Dakota with focus on Healthcare Administration. Mrs. Ogdie has co-directed 9 UMAIE courses. Mrs. Ogdie is presently working for National American University as a coordinator of the Medical Assistance program nationwide.
