T5101 – Surviving Adolescence: Literary “Adulting” in England, the Netherlands, and Italy

Join us on a literary adventure of travel and self-discovery as we journey through England, the Netherlands, and Italy reading about the transition from childhood to adulthood experienced by bygone and contemporary residents and travelers in these places.

Academic Overview
British poet William Wordsworth wrote, “the Child is father of the Man”; what he meant, and explored thoughtfully in his writing, was that the experiences of childhood and adolescence become the foundation for the adult self a person will become.  Wordsworth was clear:  both joyful and painful adolescence experiences shape our characters.  On this literary adventure in England, the Netherlands, and Italy, we will read both young adult and classic literature that focus on the process of “surviving adolescence”—books in which writers reflect on how they or their characters navigate that challenging transition between childhood and adulthood.  Texts by Shakespeare, J.M. Barrie, Charles Dickens, Roald Dahl, Kate Saunders, J.K. Rowling, Anne Frank, and Carlo Collodi, among others, will link us to the places we will be visiting while encouraging reflection on our own processes of “adulting” in a complex world.  Goals of the course are to gain greater familiarity with British and European writers, to explore intercultural connections, and to engage in self-reflective and analytical writing.

Program Fee/Cost
Program Fee includes:  Transportation and course arrangements as indicated, hotel accommodations in twin and triple rooms, continental breakfast daily, four lunches, two dinners, and one high tea (subject to change).

Prerequisites
UST students must satisfy the ENGL 121 and 201-204 core-course requirement before taking this study abroad course, under the current curriculum.  For students from other colleges, we prefer completion of a first-year composition or entry-level literature course, but will consider successful completion of a core humanities class—theology, philosophy, or history.

Description of Faculty Directors
I am Catherine Craft-Fairchild, the British literature half of the team, teaching at the University of St. Thomas for the past twenty-eight years.  “Surviving Adolescence” will be my third study abroad course.  With my daughter now a senior in college, I have been free to study, teach, and travel abroad, and I have done so avidly.  I traveled throughout Central Europe during a faculty seminar in summer, 2016; attended a conference in Bordeaux, France, in summer 2017; took an extended trip to Greece, Turkey, and Israel during fall, 2017; and co-led a study abroad course in France, Italy, and Spain in January 2018.  I am looking forward to sharing all the exciting things I’ve been learning with students as we study beautiful places in Western Europe.

I am Heather Bouwman, the children’s and young adult literature part of the team.  I’ve been at the University of St. Thomas since 2001, where I teach early American literature, creative writing, and writing for children and young adults.  As H.M. Bouwman, I also write children’s novels—including the recently published historical fantasy, A Crack in the Sea (2017).  A couple of years ago, I taught a children’s and young adult literature course that went to London—and I got hooked on traveling with students.
